Deka, affectionately known as Little Deka, is one of the newer artisans who joined Riyo Rumoday in 2020. Like all the new artisans, she was a student in the vocational training program conducted by our non-profit partner, and when she graduated the program she was asked to join the jewelry artisans. 

Deka is one of seven siblings. She has three sisters and three brothers. There are 16 people living in her household, including her parents, her siblings and her aunts, uncles and cousins. Her family is fortunate to have a home passed down from her grandparents that is large enough for everyone.

Aside from Deka, her father is the only one who works. Deka’s work with Riyo Rumoday provides her with a salary that contributes to her family’s needs. She is helping send three of her siblings to private school so they can get a better education and have more opportunities. 

When you first meet Deka you will notice that she is very quiet. But she is actually a firecracker! She is the most talkative and lively of the group, sharing her opinion on every topic. She may be small, but she is mighty. This work has given her more confidence in herself and she loves the community it gives her. 

Favorite food: Her favorite food is rice. 

Interests: She loves to sew and is one of the talented artisans behind the new scrunchies! She doesn’t want to travel because she loves where she lives! 

*Deka is one of three Deka’s in the group. Deka 1 was one of the original artisans but is now at home with her baby girl. Deka 2 joined the group next, so they usually go by nicknames.
